Remember that TV show which was going to be based on Geico's Cavemen characters? Well, despite a lot of negative buzz, it's still a go for now. According to a lot of television critics, the show is simply not funny. Not that that really matters. Plenty of unfunny shows are on TV right now (I'm looking at you Yes, Dear.
Something that may be more damaging however is the allegation that the show is "racially insensitive". While I haven't seen the show, and am therefore unable to honestly assess whether it is insensitive, I am inclined to doubt it. Perhaps I'm clinging too strongly to my love for the Cavemen commercials, but I just don't see why this would be an issue? The joke is that they're discriminated against for being cavemen. If anything, the message is that discrimination is bad no matter what.
Either way, it's starting to look like the show might not make it to broadcast. I hope not, because I'd like to see what they can do with the premise. I suppose we'll just have to wait and see. In the meanwhile, here's another reminder of why I like these commercials so much.
Is Geico's Caveman Show Racist?
